Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are a renewable energy currency and equate to the renewable energy that your system will generate - one REC being equivalent to one megawatt hour of electricity generation. The value of these RECs is claimable when you install your system helping to offset the cost of your investment. The actual value of the RECs that you can claim depends on the REC market value at the time your system has been installed. There is also a Federal Government Solar Credits scheme that allows you to get 5 times the REC value for systems up to 1.5kW, or for the first 1.5kW for larger systems.
Additionally, there are State Government feed-in tariff schemes in operation and about to commence. The NSW Government Solar Bonus Scheme will commence on 1 January 2010 and allows the owners of grid feed solar systems to be paid 60 cents per kilowatt hour (c/kWh) for the renewable energy they feed into the electricity grid.
